BCIT Engineering Competition 2024
This year ESS has held a massive event that brought together more than 90 engineering students from every field and to compete in different categories. From Designing Mechanisms for rescuing a person trapped on the roof of a burning building and building robots to developing waterdown flood damaging plans, the competition took from the participants a lot of technical skills, creativity, and teamwork to tackle some very intense engineering problems.
About the Event
This year’s theme was rescue. Competitors were faced with managing topics such as natural disasters, transportation, and emergency response. The competition was divided into several engaging categories, each testing a unique aspect of engineering:
Jr. Design: Each team was in charge of creating a mechanism that could safely carry a citizen from the building and safely place them down on the target. The mechanism took into account operation, simplicity, and efficiency of costs and deployment.
Sr. Design: Teams were tasked with creating a standalone vehicle out of the provided materials that was capable of identifying, retrieving, and safely transporting a patient to a nearby healthcare facility in an efficient and reliable manner.
Consulting: Competitors’ task was to create a report that could address the city flooding effectively and prevent future greater flooding. They created their report a week prior to the event and presented their solution to the “city council”.
Re-Engineering: Students developed a novel solution to airlifts in dense forest areas preventing helicopters from landing or sending people down to help. They were to also allow for care and transportation on the way towards the hospitals.
Debate: This year teams were debating about employing an AI in areas where human lives could depend on its decisions and if robots should be used in search and rescue missions.
The event wasn’t just a competition; it was a celebration of engineering. Students collaborated, brainstormed, and showcased their skills in a dynamic and supportive environment. The energy in the room was very inspiring as ideas turned into tangible solutions, and every challenge revealed the incredible talent within our engineering community.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the event was a chance for participants to learn from one another, engage with judges from various engineering fields, and get a taste of solving real-world problems under time constraints.
Winners
A huge congratulations to all the teams for their hard work, but especially to our winning teams who impressed the judges with their ingenuity and execution:
